A Beautiful and Historic Condominium Building

The Citizens building truly has a rich history dating back to 1917. It was constructed at the bustling corner of Gay and High for The Citizens Savings and Trust Company. Many of its historic features were restored, such as the original two-story bank hall, coffered ceiling entrance, and several original bank vaults. The upper floors now house 63 luxury residential condominiums overlooking downtown Columbus.

The Citizens Condominiums is a historic building in Downtown Columbus, Ohio listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the High and Gay Streets Historic District. It also listed on the Columbus Register of Historic Properties.

As one of the tallest buildings in Columbus, Ohio when it was built in 1917, The Citizens has a rich history and connection to the local community. The developer, Jeff Edwards, wanted to preserve the history of the building, while converting it to residential use.

The name of the community is derived from the initial occupant – Citizens Trust & Savings Bank. The historical character of the exterior was left untouched with the exception of the windows, which were replaced with new, energy-efficient models on the upper floors.

The building was built in 1917 for the Citizens Trust and Savings Company and designed by Hopkins & Dentz. Famed architect Alfred Hopkins studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris followed by several years in Rome completing his knowledge architecture, presumably in the early 1890s. By 1898, he returned to New York City and was practicing as an architect. By 1900, he was designing a new farm group for Frederick W. Vanderbilt in Hyde Park, New York.

In the 1920s and 1930s Hopkins was associated with architect John G. Dentz in the firm of Hopkins & Dentz, which developed a specialty in the design of large bank buildings such as the Citizens Trust. He published The Fundamentals of Good Bank Building in 1929.

Inside The Citizens, the Edwards team restored much of the original character paying special attention to preserving two bank vaults, the detailed ceilings and the columns of the original bank hall. The bank hall on The Citizen's first floor, is now a sophisticated public gathering space featuring a specialty cocktail bar and the vaults have been re-purposed and integrated into the design of the bar and the community mail room. To restore the columns, the team got lucky and found the grandson of the original plasterer who was able to re-cast the columns. During the renovation, stacks of old money orders dating back to the 1920’s were found and used as wallpaper around the entries of the apartment units at a homage to the history of the building.

Today this one-of-a-kind property displays the incredible restored Neoclassical architectural details that speak to the history of this iconic building. Breathtaking common areas, gorgeous interior finishes, and modern amenities provide the perfect atmosphere for hosting friends or just relaxing and enjoying views.
